THE RKF FEEDING PROGRAM

At RKF we developed a feeding program that feeds a child a daily lunch meal for KES 300 (USD $3) per month. This is a balanced meal of either maize and beans (locally known as githeri/nyoyo) or rice and beans for younger children. We involve parents and the community by promoting cost-sharing and volunteering to make them part-owners and direct stakeholders of the program.

Starting January 2018, RKF also implemented a Breakfast Program (serving porridge, locally known as uji) at schools after receiving feedback from both teachers and parents that this would help increase child participation and concentration throughout the day. We are extremely grateful to Mr. Nitin Mehta and ShearGold for sponsoring the initial pilot program.

School feeding programmes:  Food for education programmes, school feeding and take-home rations have been immensely important in sub-Saharan Africa in improving enrolment. A meta-analytical review of the Food for Education programme in 32 sub-Saharan African countries found that providing on-site meals increased girls’ and boys’ enrolment by 28% and 22% respectively in the first year of the programme, and that effects were sustained if the programme also provided take-home rations.

In the first 21 months, we served over 31,500 meals and were able to achieve the following results:
